History

The property was purpose built as a pub specifically for ‘working folk’ around 1824 by architect Charles Augustin Busby. The first landlord was William Broker who lived on site with his wife and two children. The landlord in 1887 was John Bentley who was fined on two occasions for watering down his whisky. In the 1890s the pub changed hands and was owned by Chapman & Co.
